I want to upgrade to Windows 8 from Windows Seven.. Is my laptop compatible?
I decided to buy a copy of Windows 8, the newest operating system and I wanted to know if it was compatible with a laptop that I wanted to install it on. I know Microsoft is very efficient at making sales and making them easy for their customers so I went to visit their website and buy Windows 8.
I pressed on the Upgrade Now button and it downloaded a small file to my laptop. It was a Microsoft windows 8.1 upgrade assistant. So I pressed on the button to see if my laptop was compatible with this new operating system.
See the screenshot below of the results. To see them in more detail all I had to do was click on the link. So my laptop had 60 apps and devices that were compatible and 11 that needed review.
So I pressed on the link that said that there was 11 items to review and the next compatibility details Window appeared. It showed me in detail what problems I might run into if I upgraded to Windows 8.1.
From the details window I could see that my printer, which is Canon printer, will need a driver for Windows 8.1. I could also see that my ATI drivers will need upgrading. After installing Windows 8 you we’ll need to update a number of drivers to suit this operating system. This is nothing new as the same thing applies to someone upgrading from windows XP to Windows Vista or Windows 7. There are device drivers for each operating system.
Devices – Is My Computer Windows 8 Compatible?
So to definitely make sure that my laptop or computer is compatible for windows eight, I am going to first make sure I can actually get hold of Windows 8 drivers for my particular make and model of computer.
I definitely do not want to install Windows 8 if I cannot use my printer or my graphics card.
I simply “Googled” my printer and found that it does have drivers available for Windows 8.1.
MG4200 series MP Drivers Ver. 1.02 (Windows 8.1/8.1 x64/8/8 x64/7/7 x64/Vista/Vista64/XP)
I also found drivers for my router as I did not want to be without the internet.
Programs – Are My Compatible With Windows 8?
I use a few programs for my daily work so I had to question if they were compatible with Windows 8? One such program is a small open source program called Cam studio. Some people have got it working and others haven’t. Therefore I will probably be able to work this program on Windows 8. It seems that you have to change a few audio settings and video settings to get it working. I don’t expect Windows 8 to be compatible with all audio or video until I tweak it a bit.
After investigating if my programs would work and finding the device drivers I needed I was happy to see that I can upgrade to Windows 8.
