A friend was using my computer and told me that I should have created a new user and not be logged into my computer as the main administrator. The problem is I had no idea that I was the administrator. Apparently I have no other accounts on the computer and have just changed the administrators name to my name and added a password. This friend says that this is bad for security reasons and that viruses attack you when you are logged in as administrator. Is he full of it or is this true? If so how do I make a new user and take all my settings with me? I am using Windows XP PRo. Why did it let me do that if it is not good?March 26, 2009 at 11:31 pm #31607Merlin33069Participant
The reason it is good to log on as a regular user is because when a virus takes hold of your computer, until you restart the computer the virus has the same level of privileges as the account you are on.But if you are not logged on as admin, you cannot do a lot of things, such as install programs, you have to right click and run as admin, and enter the password, this can be a hassle and IF it is worth it is all up to youThere is not straight forward right and wrong way to security, if you are into math, then i will say that security is like a bell curve, the more secure something is, the harder it is for the user to use it.IF you want to make another user, just for this purpose, remember that all your account data, musics files, desktop etc will not be transferred unless you do so manually, but to make a new account, do the following:go into your control panel, find users (xp) or user accounts (vista) you should have a new account button in xp, and in vista you must press manage another account before you can make a new onehere you can make a secondary account with standard user priveldges (note that you can select administrator, which defeats the purpose)Then you can log onto that account whenever you want to use your computerAlways make sure you have an anti-virus and (preferably) also a firewallMarch 30, 2009 at 9:19 pm #31608MitzKeymaster
I agree. It is better to log in as a user for security reasons. I think every little bit of prevention will save you a lot of potential stress in the future. If you make a new account then we can tell you how to manually move the files from the admin account to your new one.September 3, 2009 at 9:17 pm #31609SolracnasParticipant
Logging on as an admin can hurt if a virus is hangin around somewhere. It would be safer to go in as a reg user.September 14, 2010 at 2:16 pm #31610MitzKeymaster
people often forget to setup a normal user account and seem to go into the admin account and just change that to their username and make a password…this is not good..
