Hi Guys,I was posed a question, which I may have given the Member, the wrong answer,in Hindsight.Someone gives you a Flash Drive, containing Files. Is there a way to,or a Security program that will Scan the Flash Drive before downloading,it's contents,in case of a Trogan? Also I am going through Flash Drives at an alarming rate.I run Quick format after each use and occassionally run CHKDSK repair, but still they will not upload files after a short time. They are Kingston Data Traveler Flash Drives. Is there a better Brand I wonder? Thanks for any advice. 🙂January 28, 2009 at 1:48 pm #31013
Kingston is a good brand.Modern flash drives are good for millions of read/write operations. For an average user, this means they could last for years. If yours arent lasting, then its likely there is something else at work here. The 2 things that can hurt a flash drive the most are heat and radiation. If you store your flash drives in a hot place, like maybe leaving it in the centre console of your car on a hot day, this is not going to help the life of it.If you leave it in your pocket with your mobile phone, then its life is likely to be substantially reduced. If you leave it sitting on a speaker when not in use, this is not going to help it at all.Dont leave your flash drive on or near a speaker. Dont leave it near an aerial, like a remote aerial for a wireless transmitter.

Hi Dak,Hope I am not giving you grey hair, with my Computer woes. 🙂I threw one of my Fash Drives in the Rubbish Bin tonight in disgust. From what you are saying, I can now see 2 problems. Formatting too often, and they are stored about a foot from a TV.This is the 4th Flash Drive, to give up in 3 mths.I was told by Techies, that you must format regularly, to get rid of Thumbs, off the Drive.(Whatever they are)Excellent that a thumb Drive, can be Scanned, for Nasties. Thanks for the instructions, to configure Scanner.Wasn't even aware, it was even possible. Learning every Day.Appreciate your Help, once again,Dak. 🙂January 28, 2009 at 9:47 pm #31015
LOLI have had mine forever and have even washed it in the washing machine... It dried out and worked again. But I must admit I have never formatted it, as I just add small files like drivers and stuff...Also I have never had it in direct sunlight or near heat. I was wondering why it had lasted so long. It is a Scandisk brand.October 3, 2011 at 5:32 am #31016seantuckerParticipant
i have problem with my pen drive.there is inbuilt virus sinceOctober 4, 2011 at 11:35 am #31017
I bought a usb stick a few years ago…It was a 2gb but had been hyjacked to look show as 120gb.. That was terribly slow too…It was a piece of junk… If you think it is just a virus then you can format it...sometimes they are bootable too and a virus can be in the bootsector files.. If it is not bootable then formating should do it..Give it a try..you will lose any files if you format though...October 19, 2012 at 1:50 am #31018Nyle RemeParticipant
Kingston is one of big brands and if we are taking about scanning of data before downloading then it is true.this process is carried out to determine whether the flash disk is containing virus along with good files so that system can remove it without its installation.
