My computer will not play a dvd movie in Windows Media Player. I used to play them all the time with my old computer which was a pentium 4 with Windows XP. Now I have a new computer with Windows Vista and I cannot play dvds and watch them on my computer. Can anyone help me play a dvd on Windows Media Player? PS. I really hate Windows Vista.February 24, 2009 at 8:23 am #31272
Windows Media Player does not have a DVD decoder built in. It will play DVD movies, but needs to 'borrow' the decoder from a 3rd party software such as Nero. When you buy a new DVD player it will come with DVD software like Nero, Sonic or Roxio or any of a dozen others. If you have bought a new computer, it will have a DVD player installed, and somewhere in your software you'll find a disc for one of these applications, which will have been provided by the manufacturer of the DVD player. You need to install this software. Even if you only want to use Windows Media Player, the other software needs to be installed so Windows can 'borrow' the decoder from it. Once you have it installed, you can set Windows Media Player as the default player and never even see the other software again if you so chose.. so long as its installed thats all you need it for.I also dont like Vista very much, but its not Vista that is causing your problem in this case.

Mostly DVD contain .vob format or some other format which can't supported by Window media player, so windows media player can't play these dvd videos. Download VLC Player. VLC plays almostly all formats and its also free, or download K-Lite codec. K-Lite codec helps to all videos formats in Window media player.
