OK, I will try to be as detailed as possible.I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 with Windows 7 Home Premium, 500GB Western Digital hard drive, and 4GB RAM. I did a clean install with the brand new hard drive and RAM in 2009 and have had no problems until now.My husband used my laptop during our two day drive home. He didn't properly shut down the computer (he just closed it and it went into hibernation mode until the battery died). I tried to turn it on when we finally got home and it wouldn't so I tried to charge it. The battery would not charge so I ordered a new one. Two days later I got it, popped it in and fully charged it. Later, I went to start it up and it went through the boot process but before it went to Windows, the disk check came up. Disk check went on for f-o-r-e-v-e-r (almost 2 1/2 hours). Now this is the thing about the disk check on my laptop, it has been canceling disk check for almost 6 months. I found it odd that it would just start working. I was tempted to cancel it myself but I figured that it will sort itself out. Unfortunately for me, it started deleting, replacing and moving files. It scared the bejeezus out of me and with good reason. When the laptop rebooted it went through BIOS and all that jazz but when it was about to go onto the log in screen it went black and it had a movable cursor.I restarted the computer multiple times to try to get it to go to log in but it wouldn't. I tried safe mode, safe mode w/networking, and safe mode w/command prompt. I tried to boot to disk and went through every option I could think of. I tried using restore but no matter what point I would pick it would always say it was deleted or corrupted and to try another date. I even tried starting up with last known good configuration and nothing. Always the same result--black screen with movable cursor before log in screen.I don't know what to do other than reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling all my software. I was able to use Ubuntu to get in and copy my files. That's also how I'm asking for your help. Thank God for Ubuntu! I would've had to go to the library to do this otherwise. Please help! This is how I understand where you are at….You can start the computer, and it loads past BIOS, and into Windows. You log in and then see the black screen? This is where I need clarification:When you get into Windows, are you moving the mouse to move the cursor. So is it a mouse arrow? Or are you not logging into Windows and just seeing a flashing cursor that looks like a dash?July 11, 2011 at 7:10 pm #33257
