I just had another thought….you mentioned that your hard drive is Fat 32 and the external drive is ntfs...When saving a file to these different files systems the space clusters take up is different. This is just an example...so on the fat32 drive the clusters size might be 32kb whereas if the files were coming from a ntfs drive the clusters would be 4kb... It varies depending on the size of the drive. Here is a link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314878 that shows the cluster sizes.
