first, try and change your username as i suggested.in the main tbird window, click on tools>account settings> and under the optusnet account you will find 'server settings' If you cant see 'server settings' then click the + next to the account name and it will drop a menu down.there you can rename the account if you want (this is just the name you allocate it for your own purposes, and makes no difference to the function) and your username. Substitute the @ for a + in the username, click ok, to close the window. Now, in the main window, click get mail and see if it works.
