It could be a virus because the computer guy might not have removed it properly and woody can deal with this, however I have another thing to try first. You can try putting in your own Ip address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS. Where you said you looked at the properties of your connection and where you said "obtain an ip address automatically" and "obtain a DNS server automatically" Change both those to "Use the following" and enter your own details in. Now if you do not know what to put in you can see your network status and then press on details to see the screenshot below. To see your status, (win XP) double click on the network icon in the notification area. Only click on the live network icon, not the one you are not using...For Vista go to the network and sharing center, click on view status, then details. This will show you what you need to know. The default gateway in my case is my router and it is also my preferred DNS server. This is just going to help your computer find your DNS without having to search for it, and then not find it...Give it a go and if it doesn't work you can simply go back and choose the "obtain the ip and dns automatically" and it will return to how you had it. This is something you can quickly try..then open IE and see if it works. If not we move on.
