Sometimes when you install a Windows update a problem occurs and you might need to see the Windows update history. The Windows update history will show you what updates have been installed on your computer. It will also allow you to remove un-wanted updates.
This screenshot shows the icon in the notification area in Windows Vista. In Windows XP the icon is a yellow triangle with a exclamation mark.
The other way to get to Windows Updates is to go to the start menu, then choose control panel, then double click on the automatic updates icon.
How to view your Windows Vista update history?
After you have opened the Windows Update window, as shown in the screenshot below, you can now proceed to view the update history. Simply Click on the link that says View update history.
Now you will see a list of Windows Updates that have been installed on your computer as shown below.
How to Uninstall a Windows Updates on Windows Vista?
To remove a Windows update, when you are viewing the update history, click on the link Installed Updates.
How to see what Windows Updates you have installed on Windows XP?
There is no update history for Windows XP, however you can see what updates you have installed on your computer by going to Add or Remove programs in the control panel.
- To see what updates you have installed on a Windows XP computer you need to go through a different process.
- Go to the start menu at the bottom left corner.
- Choose control panel from the menu.
- Find the Add or Remove programs icon and double click on it to open it.
- A list of installed programs will appear. To see Windows updates put a tick in the box next to Show updates.
- Now you will also see all of the updates that are on your computer.
How to uninstall a Windows Update on Windows XP?
To uninstall a Windows update from your Windows XP computer you must follow the steps above to see the updates that are on your computer. Then select an update and choose to remove it.

To be honest, I haven’t paid much attention on Windows Update history but I think I should go and see what it has inside after reading this post. Useful as always Mitz
i dont understand the updates in the xp control panel since they are represented by key numbers starting with KB. although i know the update name i want to remove, i dont know its key in the control panel does anyone know where to get the keys.
I am never able to watch videos, as it stops every 3 seconds, so I have given up. What do I do?
Hi Mitz, Can’t help with an error message—didn’t get one!! That’s why I don’t know when this happened. Just noticed when wanted to check on an Update. About 150 listed Updates just disappeared. I suspect Microsoft have something to do with this via Automatic Updates. All my Updates are Custom Installed
but somehow I must have re-enabled Auto install.Disabled again now. Need to get the whole list back —in History and in Add/Remove Programs.

I think this can happen after installing a new service pack update…If the Update history is missing then the only thing you can do is go to “Go to Installed Updates” link then you can see what is installed.
It is not correct to say there is “no Update History” for Windows XP! It has ALWAYS been been possible to “View your Update History” in Windows Update. All Installed Updates should be listed there!
I have just recently noticed that my Update list before March 11, has suddenly disappeared–including from Add/Remove Programs.It also went from All Programs list–but I have got that back.
How do I get the Update list back?– In “View Update History” and in Add/Remove Programs?
