Programs that are running on your computer, especially ones that run every time you start your computer, really can slow your computer down. It is even worse when you start your computer and can see the desktop, but your computer is too busy to let you actually perform any tasks, so you must wait.
You can no doubt stop programs from making your computer slow at startup by disabling them through msconfig (system configuration utility).
It is a simple task to open msconfig and remove programs from startup in Windows but there is one problem; you might disable something you actually need. That is why removing programs from startup is not for the inexperienced computer user.

If you keep the software updates on they do check for updates far too often. If you turn these off then you still need to manually update the program. I personally forget to update my programs so I use Pc Matic to update all software and drivers when performing computer maintenance.
- If you no longer use a program and you know what the program is then it is safe to disable this in startup.
