Many web masters often wonder if they should take notice of the Alexa website ranking system? As a webmaster it is important to know where your website ranks in comparison to others. There are questions that are raised about the Alexa website ranking system as some say it works well, and in other say it is completely useless.
How are Alexa’s Traffic Rankings Determined?
Alexa’s traffic estimates and ranks are based on our panel of toolbar users which is a sample of all internet users.
Alexa’s Traffic Ranks are based on the traffic data provided by users in Alexa’s global toolbar panel over a rolling 3 month period. Traffic Ranks are updated daily. A site’s ranking is based on a combined measure of Reach and Pageviews. Reach is determined by the number of unique Alexa users who visit a site on a given day. Pageviews are the total number of Alexa user URL requests for a site. However, multiple requests for the same URL on the same day by the same user are counted as a single Pageview. The site with the highest combination of users (Reach) and Pageviews is ranked #1. Additionally, we employ data normalization to correct for biases that may occur in our data. source
Alexa Website Ranking is Not Accurate
How can Alexa possibly be accurate when I have one website with under two thousand visits a day, one that has about 500 visits a day, and thirdly one with 10,000 visits a day, all with similar Alexa ranking? Please explain?
As we can see, the Alexa traffic rank is calculated from results provided by users that have the Alexa toolbar installed while browsing websites. So what about the website traffic that does not have the toolbar installed?
But People Take Notice
It is really annoying that this Alexa website ranking does not make sense, but people take notice of it. I can clearly see that this website ranking system is not completely accurate because I have so many websites to use as test cases. It is simply not right that a site with over 10,000 visits a day has a larger Alexa website ranking than one that only has 500 visits a day?
Other Webmasters investigate a sites Alexa website ranking and their Google page rank and use this to determine if the website is popular or not. There is no denying this.
Getting Under 100k Alexa Website Ranking
Guest posting is a great way to get your Alexa down in a hurry. I personally had an Alexa ranking of 20,000 on this website, then re-branded it and shot right up to the millions. Now I am down to 39,000 but I have been slack! People think it is some big secret and people are just lucky to get a low ranking. Although I still think it is not accurate, it is important though, as people do take notice…
How to Increase Alexa Rank
There is no real secret about how to increase Alexa ranking. It is simple, get real people to your website. As stated above, guest posting will bring people to your website and with each guest post you will see a slight increase. You can also create your own Alexa toolbar for your website visitors to install and use.. That would surely get your rankings down?
What Kind of Information Does Alexa Provide?
The Alexa website information can provide traffic stats, search analytics, reviews, click streams, and much more. You can even compare your website to others. My favourite part of these statistics is the search analytics as I feel that these are reasonably accurate.
Alexa Traffic Rank Facts
I have been building websites for many years and I tried to ignore the Alexa traffic Rank statistics, however people take notice and therefore we, as Webmasters need to take notice as well.
