High performance of computing basically has lot to do with the speed of your PC. Having a speedy system with a fast microprocessor and a big amount of RAM and other accessories means a lot if you want to keep up with the pace the hi-tech industry is growing these days. In simple terms the speed of your PC alongside the speed of the internet is what matters more from an individual PC user’s point of view. If you are experiencing a slow computer and internet connection , you are not the only one. And the good news is, both the internet speed and your PC’s performance can be enhanced to some extent easily, and here are few tips that you can try to achieve this.
Increase Computer Speed
#1. Free up the disk space
Free up the disk space occupied by all the unnecessary files that are automatically stored when you install a program, or your system crashes and you make a reboot. The speed of the PC may rise significantly when these temporary files are deleted. All you got to do is access the “system and security” option in the control panel. Under the administrative tool you will come across a “Free up Disk Space” link. This will help you in removing all the unnecessary files along with shadow copies that slowing down your system.
#2. Defrag – Yeah Computer Maintenance
Better performance can be achieved by defragmenting your hard drive as well. When “defrag” tool is run on the hard drive, it pulls together all the fragments of a file into one place so that when the file runs, it runs faster. Hence this makes reading and accessing the files much efficient.
The hard drive can be defragmented from the control panel, under the “System and Security” option. It is found by the link “defragment your hard drive” in the administrative tools.
#3. Size Matters – RAM That is
Another important factor that affects your system performance is the amount of random access memory (RAM) you have. A larger amount of RAM greatly improves the processing speed. So make sure to check your system RAM, and RAM requirements of the application you are running. For example, running a 3D-modelling or gaming program will require a high amount of RAM. If you are running such applications, upgrade your PC with more RAM if there is a shortage.
#4. Cut Down on Graphics
The speed of the computer also decreases if you are using too many visual effects. These visual effects are no doubt a treat to your eyes but they are also included in the factors slowing the performance of your system. You can optimize the appearance and performance of windows by customizing it according to your needs. In the control panel, when items are viewed by “large or small icons instead of category” you will see this option “Performance Information & Tools”. Click on it and proceed to the “advanced tool” there. Here you can adjust the setting either for best performance or best appearance as shown in the image below. The choice is yours! You can also set up optimized performance by eliminating animations and visualizations under the custom setting option.
Slow Internet Speed, What Can I Do?
A slow internet speed often results due to improper browser settings and loading, and problems with the equipments and connectivity at the transport level. If your connection is shared among multiple users, you might face this issue more often as the bandwidth gets divided among many users. You may even have some web application like a Java script running in the background, consuming up a chunk of the bandwidth. Here I will give you some useful tips to achieve maximum internet speed while you are browsing the net.
#1. Reset Your Modem
Simply resetting your modem, and if you are using a router, restarting the router can do worlds of good for improving your internet speed. You never know how good a speed you can achieve by simply doing a reboot or reset.
#2. Clean Up Cached Files
Clean up all the unnecessary cached web contents and files that may have something to do with slowing down your internet connection. Such of these programs can run in the background and because of them, poor speed may result. To remove these files in Mozilla Firefox, you have to launch the Mozilla browser. From the “options” menu go to “advanced” screen as shown below, and perform the removal operation.
#3. Stop Sharing
The speed of your internet connection could become slow if you are sharing it with other devices like Tablet, Smartphone, Internet TV etc. One of this can be using your connection simultaneously and making an impact. If you are not using these devices, avoid connecting them to the internet at the moment when you are experiencing a slow connection.
#4. Bad Cookies
Internet performance could be hampered due to the cookies that are stored in your computer while you browse the net. Some cookies can also make your browser freeze all of a sudden. To remove these cookies in Mozilla Firefox, go to the “options” menu again and then go to “privacy” as shown in image below. Remove individual cookies or all of them together. This should be done on a regular basis. I do it every other day.
#5. Freeing Bandwidth
Here is the best solution ever recommended on boosting your internet connection speed! This can be achieved by freeing some bandwidth that is being consumed by your operating system itself! That you never probably even thought about. You can recover this for you, by following the direction given here:
- Press windows key (with the Windows symbol on it) on the keyboard followed by the “R” key.
- Enter “gpedit.msc” in the search dialog box.
- A window with the name “Local Group Policy Editor” will be opened.
- On the left hand side, click on the “Administrative Template”.
- Select “Network” in the options under Administrative Template.
- On the right hand side, now double click “QoS Packet Scheduler”
- In the window that has appeared now, select “Limit Reservable Bandwidth”
- A “Limit Reservable Bandwidth” window will now pop up with the “not configured” option selected by default.
- Click “enable” as shown in the image below.
- Set the Bandwidth limit to 5 instead of 20 on the left hand side. You can set it to zero as well, if you don’t want to give even a small bite to the system. When this “Limit Reservable bandwidth” is not configured, the system uses its default 20%.
- Hit apply and reboot your system. At least 10% more internet speed is guaranteed with this!

Install a program to do it all for you! Speed up your computer!
A software program will not upgrade your memory but it will clean out all the junk files, detect Malware, delete unused registry keys, Automatic Driver updates, and more. At the moment I am using PC Matic to maintain everything for me. This software is amazing and has won a number of top awards. You can get a free scan for your computer to see how it works before you buy.
