IPad2 was released in March 2011 but who is the real competition for this product? Basically iPad2 is the updated version of the original iPad.
IPad 2 has more features than its predecessor. The main ones being:
- The size, it’s slimmer and looks more sophisticated.
- Dual cameras which allow you to talk face to face from your iPad.
- A port which enables you to connect your iPad 2 direct to your TV. See our iPad beginners tutorial to see more.
If talking about its competitors you can hardly name the original iPad as they both are pretty much the same apart from updates.
Some people think the closest competitor of iPad 2 is the iPhone but I think they are wrong for one reason. Both devices were created with different purposes in minds. The IPhone is a device to entertain you, and the iPad is more for work and studying due to its well thought out organizational features.
Who are its competitors then?
Overall there are three devices which might be in competition with the iPad 2. These are T-Mobile LG G-Slate, Motorola XOOM Tablet PC and ASUS Eee Slate EP121 Tablet PC.
Let’s look at them closer
T-Mobile LG G-Slate which features three cameras, there are two cameras facing the rear (one for videos, the second one for stills and LED flash available for both) and the third one is a front facing camera. The touchscreen display is only 8.9-inch, however this is more than compensated for with the 3D feature. And one more thing that the iPad 2 still doesn’t have is a 1080p compatible video natively. The tablets are available in two versions, of 32 GB or 64 GB and are running on a dual core Tegra 2 processor. The device provides some Google Mobile apps such as Google Maps, Talk, and Video.
The next competitor is Motorola XOOM Tablet PC which features a 16:9 widescreen HD display , a 10.1-inch screen and 1200-pixel by 800-pixel resolution, which is a little bit more than what the iPad offers with a 9.7-inch screen and 1024-pixel by 768-pixel resolution. It’s a genuine multitasker. For instance iPad 2 only permits limited multitasking in the background and its resolution equates to a ratio of 4:3. As for batteries this Motorola device’s battery can last as long as the iPad’s, namely up to 10 hours (we are talking about devices of similar size to the iPad 2). Other aspects of Motorola XOOM Tablet PC are two cameras, a Micro USB port and an HDMI out connector. Like in the case of the T-Mobile LG G-Slate the device is powered by a Tegra 2 Dual Core CPU. In general the XOOM will cost approximately the same price as the iPad 2 but will offer only half of the features.
ASUS Eee Slate EP121 Tablet PC is a strong competitor too as it presents more options than the iPad 2. An Intel Core i5 CPU and Intel-based HD graphics system powers this processor. The display is really impressive (12.1-inch, 1280-pixel by 800-pixel resolution). The device is complete with two built-in USB ports, a Bluetooth Keyboard, a Pen Stylus, a mini HDMI out port and dual card reader. To get this device you will have to pay much more than the iPad2.

Conclusion
Notice that we did not menation the Kindle fire as a competitor? Well we did finally compare the Kindle fire to the Ipad on Tips4pc as Kindle has come a long way.
IPad 2 misses some features which can be offered by its competitors (even if people will have to pay a bit more for them). Hopefully iPad 3 which is expected to be released in autumn 2011 will make up for this!

We have two ipads, an acer tablet and a Samsung.. They are all awesome and it really comes down to the apps…Do you care if you use apple apps or android apps… If you get into android apps then you have far more choices of which device you use them on. Apple is for apple so if you have an iphone I would suggest sticking to apple. 🙂
Competition with iPad2 is getting tougher. Samsung Galaxy Tab is getting its way to Apple. I think these two are competing real. Galaxy Tab has an awesome specs and features. Both gadgets are great so its hard to choose which one is better.
Galaxy tab 10.1 was the ipad2’s real competition. And Apple was well aware of that.
That’s why all of a sudden Apple opens the attack on Samsung’s galaxy line. They are doing too well and are taking away apple’s customers.
The Ipad 2 was a scam though, and I’m surprised that people were not more angry about this. Apple leaving out stuff in the first Ipad on purpose so they can sell it as new features in ipad 2.
Sony is one tablet maker that I would definitely consider buying! With the huge surge of Android tablets flooding the market, there has to be someone to step up and compete against apple!
I think Apple still have it all their own way, a least when it comes to sales. Look at the Galaxy Tab 10.1, very similar to the ipad 2 but the specs were much better. What happened? Apple drag Samsung through the courts and delay or prevented them from selling.
The trouble is, Android just isn’t sexy and although it appeals to techies must people want something to look pretty and work without needing to think or adjust anything. The very thing that Android is good at (customisation etc) actually puts a lot of people off. I happen to think 2012 will be the year Android tablets push on and close the gap on Apple. This will happen just as the iPad 3 hits the shelves though…Just my 2 cent worth 🙂

I agree Graham..I think the iPad fad will pass and the sales will slow when people relize that most of these devices actually do the same job. Some are even better than apple!! I have a few devices with android and a few apple devices and I am not impressed with the fancy stuff… I just want something to work.
