I have had two 'powered' drives burn up on me, while the USB powered drives are still going strong. The USB powered drives are also more portable and convenient to take with you. If you are going to leave an external drive plugged in all of the time, make sure that it is on a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) and is insulated against electrical spikes. I prefer to just plugin my USB drive, do my backups and then disconnect the drive. This works for me, but I know it may not be the right answer for everyone's setup.
