You could be sitting at a bus stop, at McDonalds family restaurant, or just a friends house visiting, it doesn’t matter. As long as there isn’t security in place on the wireless network, you can connect. Most DIY home wireless networks are not configured correctly, and therefore can be a accessed. If you are at a friends house you may have to ask for the password or WEP key.

To connect to a wireless network you will need one of these

  1. A wireless pci card slotted into the side of your laptop installed and working.
  2. If you have inbuilt wireless, make sure it is switched on. Usually a switch on the side or front of the laptop.
  3. Either a usb wireless adapter or a wireless pci card connected to your desktop computer, installed and working.

How to find a wireless network to connect to

network1

  1. Open Control Panel, select Network Connections.
  2. Right click on Wireless Network Connection, select Properties

  4. Right click on Wireless Network Connection again and select View Available
  5. If there is a wireless network in range it will show up with security details. If it says it is unsecured you can press connect in the bottom right.

Notes:

  • Another way to connect or find wireless networks is to double click on the wireless connection icon in the right hand corner near the time.
  • If there are more than one wireless network available, they will all show up, and you can choose which one you want to connect
