Why is Bluray discs better than a DVD disc

First there was the DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-Ram, and the dual layer. Now to top them all off we have the bluray disc. Unlike the predecessors that only fit 4.7gb of data on a single layer, the bluray already blows them out of the water.

The bluray is a rewritable optical disc that already holds 25gb of data on a single layer. This means  it can hold 2 hours of high-definition video or 12 hours of standard video. A dual-layer Blu-ray Disc holds 50 GB. You could even call it a portable hard disk drive. Imagine having a few Bluray discs to have you whole computer backed up on.

To use the new bluray disc you will need a bluray compatible DVD burner and a home DVD player that plays Bluray discs. Of course this is very expensive at the moment as it is new technology, however if you wait a while the prices will drop. Even a single disc is very expensive at the moment.

With HDTV becoming the way of the future, we will indeed need these discs to even record you favorite TV show as HDTV will not fit on a normal DVD.

There’s also plans for a hybrid format, which combines Blu-ray and DVD on the same disc so that it can be played in both Blu-ray players and DVD players.
