And apparently officially there is no difference anymore, I think you can use both for storage-medium and also for the mathematical term.

If I would speculate on the origins of the two spellings then I would guess that disk was first used as an abbreviation of diskette. As floppy disk was actually floppy diskette. And Disc comes from discus which is the name of flat and circular shape.
Both being storage medium and the disc replacing the floppy disk while computers were becoming more popular and common. So people who got introduced to computers for the first time when cd&#039;s were all new and fancy but floppy disks were also still used in computers, they see the word disc everywhere and probably just assume that the floppy disk would be spelled the same way thus calling it floppy disc.</description>
