Hi guys

How are you all?

This month has been busy as usual, however I would love more feedback about the website!! Please send me an email, or go to our forum and tell me what you think. This is how I have built this webpage, listening to other peoples opinions and views really help me figure out what is the best thing for the website. It doesn't matter if you do not like something, just let me know. I would like to know if it is easy to navigate around Tips4pc, is it easy to find something, and are the articles easy to understand?

Also I am looking for other computer geekish people, not experts, just people that love computers, that can write articles for my website. It could be about something simple like where to find your files on your computer, or how to use Messenger, or any program you like.

Get back to basics - computer basics

Computer basics is something we all need to know in order to use a computer, however I have found that some people have been getting away with it. For example a friend of mine does her business books, send and receives emails, and writes letters, but still does not know how to copy files, move files, or backup files.

As you all know, I make computer how to video tutorials and post them on Youtube. These are great if you are trying to learn how to do something on a computer because you can actually see it being done.  It is like getting a friend to show you how to send an email or create a new folder.

Computer tips, tricks, basics

I also released my new computer basics e-book which has already sold over a hundred copies in the first month. This absolutely stunned me. I have had nothing but great reports about the contents of the book and I am very happy that is it working out because there are many other books on this same subject.

Golden rules for using Microsoft word
  • Always save your work often. Don’t go typing a great letter or an important document only to loosing it by making a stupid mistake.

  • Learn how to undo. A quick way is to press CTRL and the letter Z on your keyboard. There will also be an undo and redo arrow in the top menu.

  • Know where you have saved your document. Take a not if it is an unusual spot. By default it should go into your my document folder.

  • Use a template for a professional looking letter. When you start a new document you will have a choice to use a template or a blank document. Choosing a template will show you what a letter layout looks like.

  • Use the find option to find a word in a document. Press CTRL and F to bring up a find and replace dialog box in most versions of Microsoft Word. Once you have typed your word press find next. If the word exists in the document then it will show you where. You can press Find next again to keep finding the correct instance of the word. For example there might be 10 mentions of the word dog in the document, so if you press find next it will go to the next one..This can save you a lot of time and take you directly to the right spot in a document.

  • Always know how to make a border around your page. Go to the Format menu, select the Borders and Shading command, and click the Page Border tab. For 2007 Go to the Page Layout tab, then in the Page background section click on Page boarders.

  • Jump quickly between documents. If you work with a lot of open, overlapping documents, here’s a quick way to cycle between them: Press CTRL and F6 to jump from one to the next.

If you have windows Vista then you will see that you have more control over automatic updates. When your computer comes up with that little reminder icon in the notification area, simply double click on it to open the Windows Update box.

How to find the Run box?

If you cannot find a link to your run box in the start menu simply press the WINKEY and R. The run box will appear in Windows Vista and Windows XP. You can use the run box to get to the registry editor (regedit), system configuration utility (msconfig), and more hidden settings.
