Printer Problems

When you want to print an important document and your printer does not work, it is an absolute nightmare. Here is a quick list of some common printer problems that you can investigate.

Printer Is Not Turned On
Just because you have turned the computer on and it is connected to a printer, this does not mean the printer is on. This is the most common problem.

Out Of Paper
It is usually obvious that you have ran out of paper if you have one computer connected to one printer. However if you are in an office environment you cannot keep track of what paper has been used and what is left.

You should also make sure the paper is in the correct spot.

Paper Jam
This is an almost obvious problem because you should here the paper getting scrunched up. Nevertheless the printer will stop and you will have to un-jam the paper. Always try to take the paper out the way it would usually come out…Pulling it out in the opposite direction will not help your printer.

Select the right printer?
Sometimes a person has the wrong printer selected as their default printer. For example you might have a fax connected to your computer and you might be trying to print to that. See the screenshot below. When I press print this box comes up and if I press the drop down arrow I can choose which printer I want to print to.

Out Of Ink
Most printers now days will come up with a message on your computer saying that your ink is running low. Printers do keep printing and you will see faded ink on your paper. If the ink is really low than the printer may not print at all.

Put an outside border around a paragraph of text in Word 2007

If you have a section of text that you want to outline with a border to make it stand out you can easily do this in Word 2007.

1.    Make sure you are on the Home Tab or ribbon.

2.    Select the text that you want to put a border around.

3.    See the screenshot below. Press on the small arrow next to the outside borders symbol.

4.    A menu will drop down. Choose Outside Borders.

5.    This will put a border around the exact text that you selected. See below.

Quick email tips..

Most email programs have a few main features in common. They all are used for sending, drafting, and receiving emails. Programs such as Outlook, Firefox, and Windows Mail, are also very similar to the web based email clients. These include Yahoo Mail, Gmail, Hotmail, and so on.

·         If you press on the link “To” you will be able to add a contacts email address by choosing it from your contact list. This saves having to type the entire email address in.

·         If you press on “Cc” you can choose a contacts email address to send a copy of the email to.

·         If you press on “Bcc” you can add multiple email recipients to a Blind Carbon Copy that will hide all of the recipients email addresses from everyone else.

·         If you have not finished your email message you can press on “save as draft” to work on it at a later date.

·         You can send a picture by pressing on “attach file”.

Computer Tips and Terminology

Card: This is a general word, and so I will make the definition general as well
-A card for a laptop is an add-on card which allows more functionality to laptops
-A Card for a camera or similar device, normally SD cards, are used much like flash drives and can be used to save data or anything else
-Internal computer cards come in many different flavors, AGP, PCI, PCI-E and so on, used to add functionality to desktop PCs

Case Sensitive: A term used to describe if it is of importance to use upper or lower case letters. Passwords can be case sensitive. For example your password may be YKL9at but if you type ykl9at it will not work.

CD-ROM: Compact Disk - (Read Only Memory), a onetime use CD, meaning that once its burned at the factory it can never be edited again.

CD-RW: Compact Disk (Re-Writable), a type of compact disk which can be erased and rewritten many times rather then the standard 1 use, must cannot be burned more than once using a normal cd-r drive.

Compatibility Mode: This is a process in which a computers Operating System tries to copy the way an older processor, operating system or hardware platform works to allow older software to remain compatible with newer hardware or software.

Control Panel: Part of an Operating System which allows the user to change the settings of a Operating System like adding new accounts, setting time limits on when the computer shuts down, adding and removing software etc.

Copy: This is a command normally done by selecting a body of text or image and then pressing the right click button and selecting the option "Copy" which allows the user to copy the text or image to another document.

Cookie: A text information message that is stored on your computer when you visit a web page. When you return to the page the cookie is used to recognize you.

CRT: Cathode Ray Tube, a type of Display used in older TVs and computer monitors, these work much like the "cathode ray tube' experiment many people have done in chemistry before, firing particles into a film behind the screen to make a picture, uses a 'firing mechanism' inside which moves up and down, really fast, basically it’s a set of magnets that can be polarized by electricity. which aim the particles in the right direction.

Cursor: Your mouse pointer, looks normally like a small arrow, but can be an hourglass, a hand or anything else imaginable. When it turns into a flashing line, ready to write text, then this is a cursor.
