Hi guys

How are you all?

As usual it has been a busy month at Tips4pc. The website continues to grow and attract thousands of followers every month. At the moment I am working on a computer basics book which is currently 24,000 words so far. I am trying to make this book easy to understand as I know how hard it is to grasp all of this technology when you are just new to computers. Now days people just expect or presume that most people can use a computer and this leaves the newbie’s in the dark.

The book will be for sale for $9.95 at Tips4pc and a few other select locations. Of course everyone that is signed up for the newsletter will receive a discount. I am writing this book to help my parents learn about computers. They are both over 70 and find it very hard to get explanations that start from scratch.

What is this buzz about Twitter?

Twitter is both weird and wonderful at the same time. It’s just a page where you add entries about what you are doing. You could be reading a book, having a baby, posting an article to your blog, or anything you think other people would want to know.

Comments from people you are following will come to your home page and you can reply to them. It is almost like being a stalker, but once you are in the swing of it, Twitter is highly addictive.

There are two categories of people on Twitter. There are the people that are being followed and of course the people that are following them. If you have a website your aim would be to get as many people following you as you possibly can. This means that they are interested in you and your website and want to keep updated with its progress. Twitter also opens the door to direct networking with others in your field which can become a valuable tool.

For the average person that browses the internet, Twitter is a great way of keeping track of what your favorite website is up to. Sometimes it may also give you an inside peek into the person behind the website. But don’t get me wrong, Twitter is for everyone but I just see more benefits if you have a website.

Tips4pc is now on Twitter so if you are interested in what’s happening at Tips4pc, and maybe get some juicy gossip along the way, follow me on Twitter. It is free to join and is great fun.

Apply a template to a folder in Windows XP or Windows Vista

You know how the My Pictures folder has picture tasks in the left sidebar, and the music folder has music tasks, well this is the template I am talking about. You can apply a particular template to any folder you like. For example if you have pictures in a folder other than the original pictures folder, you can apply the template to make it look like it is a picture folder.  Did I confuse you?

1.    Simply go to the folder you that you want to change the template on.

2.    Then go to the menu at the top and choose view. If there is no menu at the top on Windows Vista, see Show the old menu with file, edit, tools, and view in Windows Vista.

3.    Choose customize folder from the menu.

4.    On the customize tab, choose the little arrow for the menu to drop down.  See screenshot below.

5.    Choose what template you want to have for this folder.

6.    Press apply and ok.

Changing a template for a folder can be very useful. I have a picture folder on my backup hard drive and have applied a picture template to the folder.  It makes it easier to view the pictures and complete tasks that are related only to pictures. Give it a try. You can always change it back if you do not like it.

Protect a file by making it a read only file

Instead of going to the trouble of hiding a file, I like to make it read only. This way another user can view it, alter it, but not save over it. The original stays intact and safe. If a person did change the file in any way, they would have to save the new file under another name.

1.    Simply go to the file you want to make read only.

2.    Hold the ALT key in on your keyboard and double click your mouse on the file. This will open the file properties, not the actual file.

3.    On the general tab, tick the box next to Read only.

4.    Then press apply and then Ok.

Now your file will be safe even from you. I know I have accidentally lost a file while editing it and I do not have to worry because I always will have the read only version available. This little trick is handy for anyone, home or office computer user.

If you want to update the file you must remove the read only feature.

Why keyboard shortcuts do not work for me?

I have had a few questions about this and it seems to be the same problem for everyone. It is their keyboard. Some new keyboards have a F LOCK key in the top right hand corner. If you press this F LOCK key it disables the F1-F12 keys. This stops you from using such shortcuts like pressing F3 when you are on the desktop to bring up a search box.

So definitely take a closer look at your keyboard, because the answer may be staring you in the face, literally.
